Villa Solara

Baa Atoll lies seventy nautical miles north-west of the Maldivian capital, drawn around some of the clearest reef water in the Indian Ocean. UNESCO designated the entire atoll a Biosphere Reserve, and the protection is felt everywhere — fewer boats, fewer footprints, and marine life that arrives by the thousand rather than the dozen.

Mornings begin without sound. The reef begins at the shoreline and the house reef is reached on foot. Through the season, manta rays gather at Hanifaru Bay in numbers seen almost nowhere else on earth, and whale sharks pass through the deeper channels weeks at a time.

Evenings move at the pace of the sun. Local life on the inhabited islands is unchanged — fishing villages, Friday afternoon football on the sand, women weaving palm-leaf mats outside their homes. The villa arranges visits to all of it, by private boat, with a guide who has lived in the atoll all his life.

Transfers from Malé are arranged directly by the estate — by seaplane in thirty-five minutes, or by private speedboat for guests preferring not to fly. Nothing about arrival or departure is left for guests to coordinate.
